Pukekohe Station closed for redevelopment - An update on our update
How are the Pukekohe station redevelopment works progressing towards the late 2024 reopening?
Back in August, NZ Transit Buzz made a trip to Pukekohe Station to check out the redevelopment of Pukekohe Station and see how the electrification works were progressing between Pukekohe and Papakura.
Almost 4 months on on a drizzly grey Sunday NZ Transit Buzz was in the area again and captured some photos of the redevelopment works to provide an update on our update and showcasing some before and after construction shots from the NZ Transit Buzz archive.
The old station building has been moved offsite with new stairs to platforms 1 & 2 installed and the platforms have been extended South in preparation for 6-car trains and the site has been future-proofed for 9-car trains. Platforms have also been narrowed for a reconfigured track layout through the station limits.
Looking from the overbridge towards Papakura the station passing loop has been reconfigured and tracks have been relaid, the old stabling yards have made way for platforms 3 & 4, and platforms 1 & 2 have been significantly narrowed to allow for 3 tracks to fit between the platforms.
Looking south over the old stabling yard platforms 3 & 4 continue to be constructed and in the distance, the new electric stabling yards are being constructed as well as new staff facilities.
At the Station Road overbridge tracks that were pulled up during the 2021-22 Christmas Shutdown tracks were fully replaced, since then the overhead masts have been installed, NZ Transit Buzz suspects there is still a final track configuration to be installed during the 2023-24 Christmas Shutdown.
This view from the laneway beside Pukekohe Station shows how much the area has changed, with electrification masts installed, new platforms jutting out from where there were once stabling yards and many more tracks through the station.
Below are a few extra pictures of work happening around the Pukekohe Station Site.
While there is still no official confirmation regarding the station reopening date post-upgrade, the Auckland Transport website says ‘the Pukekohe shuttle service that connects Papakura and Pukekohe would be suspended from mid-2022 until the second half of 2024’, so one can assume services are due to resume in late 2024.
