This week, Auckland gets two new bus routes, Rotorua Rail Cruising opens a track extension and the City Rail Link gets a green light with signalling systems going live.

After two weeks of free rides on Whangārei’s new SchoolLink services, full-price fares have been reintroduced, as of July 1st fares are $1 each way for children and young people.
KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy has spoken out about Interislander’s future, the performance of the ferries, and why he’s committed to continuing in the top job after a turbulent week for the state-owned enterprise.
The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway had a pop-up café open over Matariki weekend while their café changes owners, the Cycle Train connection was unavailable over the long weekend as bad weather had delayed repairs and maintenance works in the corridor and there was no safe route from the Tunnel to Te Akeake gate.
Trains could run on the Melling Line on weekends as part of the RiverLink project.
KiwiRail has recently completed work stabilising the hill above the on the Newmarket side, shotcrete has been blasted into place and layers have been cut into the hill and covered with matting, new fencing has also been installed.
KiwiRail is expected to meet with Government ministers imminently to provide a cost range for exiting the now cancelled Cook Strait mega ferry shipbuilding contract.
Design work on a pedestrian clip-on to the Waikouaiti River rail bridge can begin after a community fundraising target was reached, the bridge between Waikouaiti and Karitane is intended to be part of a cycling and walking trail linking coastal communities north of Dunedin.
Greater Auckland has released a video obtained under an OIA request showing Auckland Transport and NZ Transport Agency - Waka Kotahi’s plans for Light Rail in Auckland and the likely route across the city.
A covered bike parking shelter is set to be installed at the Lincoln Road bus interchange, the covered stand will have 12 Sheffield bike stands allowing for parking for up to 24 bikes & will have solar-powered lighting & replaces the three existing bike stands in the area, the shelter will be installed during July 2024.

Work on Tauranga’s Strand Railway underpass is progressing well with a large majority of works now completed, crews are continuing to work on finishing features in the underpass and the connecting boardwalk on the seaside.

Wellington bus, train, and ferry fares increased by 10% on Monday, Greater Wellington Regional Council said the fare hike was necessary to cover the rising cost of running the city's transport network.
During the Matariki long weekend, KiwiRail tied the overhead line from the Pukekohe-Papakura electrification works into the rest of the Auckland Network.
Auckland Transport announced that industrial action by rail operator, Auckland One Rail’s unionised train staff has been withdrawn, meaning rail services can return to their regular schedule.
NZ Transport Agency - Waka Kotahi is working with Auckland Transport on extending the times of the day buses can use the bus lanes along the Northwestern interim busway, the adjustment requires a bylaw change, and consultation is due shortly.
Locomotives doing the hard yards at the front end of the Wairarapa's passenger carriage units are also at the front end of low-emission technology with the 40-plus years old units recently retrofitted with low-emission engine kits.
KiwiRail is hosting a community open day at the Remutaka Incline Railway Historic Society on the 14th of July, there will be, vintage train rides, a walk-through tour of an old-school workshop, and KiwiRail will be showcasing the work they’re doing inside the Remutaka Tunnel.
From 21 July, the 195, 942 and 995 bus services will run more often, and two new bus services, the 888 and 999 will start running, several of these changes are funded by Auckland Council’s Climate Action Transport Targeted Rate.
195 - will run every 30 minutes in the evening, until the last trip, seven days a week.
942 - will become the 94, and buses will run more often Between Verrans Corner and Takapuna, from 7am until 7pm, buses will run every 15 minutes, seven days a week. (Buses will run earlier than 7am and later than 7pm, just less often than every 15 minutes.)
995 - will run every 30 minutes on weekdays and will continue to run every hour on weekends and public holidays.

KiwiRail and City Rail confirmed that the City Rail Link signalling systems were successfully integrated with the wider rail network.
Otago Regional Council and Dunedin City Council are providing a variety of free buses and parking facilities for rugby fans heading to the All Blacks Vs England game on Saturday.
Construction sites at Drury & Ngaakooroa Stations have been quiet since platform edges and protective hoardings were installed, Drury station is expected to be completed in 2025 with Ngaakooroa due to be completed in 2026.

Two Featherston businesses have been forced to let staff go after a traffic island was installed near a rail crossing which caused customer numbers to drop.
The Park and Ride at the State Highway 2 and Ōmokoroa Road intersection will close and be relocated just north of Prole Road, making way for construction crews to start ground preparations for a new roundabout.
At Paeraataa Station earthworks have been underway forming the approach ramps for the station access road overbridge, In Paerata the railway reserve is being utilised as a construction hub for Stage 4 of the Rail Network Rebuild.

KiwiRail considered eight options to keep its ageing Interislander fleet afloat before proceeding with two new mega ferries which have now been cancelled.
StraitNZ, the private operator of the two Bluebridge ferries, has experienced increased demand for its services following the grounding of the Aratere.
KiwiRail has shared photos of the City Rail Link & KiwiRail crews at work connecting CRL’s signalling systems to the wider rail network and powering up the new overhead electric lines between Papakura and Pukekohe.

City Rail Link has shared photos of Maungawhau Station's permanent exterior strip lighting in action, earlier this month the station was lit up in celebration of Matariki, but it appears those lights were temporary and have been replaced.

City Rail Link crews have also been checking signal sighting distances for the 30 signal lights inside the tunnel, the verification confirms that train drivers will be able to properly see upcoming signals that were commissioned over Matariki weekend.
The prosecution of a recreational boat skipper highlights the serious consequences that can result from distraction while travelling at speed on the water, On 13 April 2023, James Thomson collided with the Waitere ferry near Russell, Thomson was distracted by an engine alarm and he failed to see the Waitere approaching from his starboard side, the collision caused significant damage to the Waitere ferry and to people on board.

At Pukekohe, signage has been installed across the station buildings and structures, the new signs have no mention of Auckland Transport/AT Metro and platform signs show the next stop as Papakura.

The hoardings on the overbridge have been pushed hard up against the new protective screens, the new artwork in the carpark has been installed but remains covered and a new gate has been installed at the construction site access.

Auckland Transport has cited commercial sensitivity in not disclosing any financial penalties on Auckland One Rail for service disruption, following almost three weeks of rolling industrial action by 500 rail workers last month.
Government ministers have raised “serious questions” about KiwiRail’s financial outlook and its safety record, while two more members have resigned from the state-owed enterprise’s board.
Port Marlborough is currently demolishing the old terminal building, the port is also undertaking maintenance which includes strengthening work to Number 1 Long Arm Wharf (No1LA).
KiwiRail is working towards reopening Dublin Street at the Auckland Street intersection by the end of August, Broadway will also reopen to coincide with Dublin Street and the new rail maintenance depot and office will be completed at the beginning of August.
KiwiRail crews recently replaced the Rolleston rail crossover, works took place 24/7 over 3 days and involved over 30 people on site, these works allow trains travelling over this crossover to return to the usual line speed of 40km/h.

Construction on the Waitematā Station Plaza and Tyler Street Upgrade is set to begin on July 15 with works expected to take 18 months.
Interislander’s Kaitaki ferry has been missing a stabiliser fin for more than 18 months, meaning sailings were cancelled this week due to large swells, while rival operator Bluebridge could continue with a freight-only service.

Transport Minister Simeon Brown has welcomed progress on Northwest Rapid Transit, as the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi confirms next steps on the preferred option, a busway alongside State Highway 16 from Brigham Creek to Auckland City Centre.
Work to install the coloured aluminium fins onto the Mercury Lane entrance building has begun, the fins arrive pre-arranged within squared panels before being lifted by the tower crane and lowered behind the current scaffolding to its designated position.
Nine panels were installed this week, with more than 100 panels to be installed on the southern, eastern and northern sides of the building.
